Sustainability and Exclusivity: The Answers to Why Vintage Fashion is Trending

In 2023, vintage pieces became hugely popular among celebrities. Items from brand archives were handpicked for special occasions by Zendaya, Kylie, and Kendall Jenner. With four fashion seasons introducing new creations every year, why are they turning to the past?

The answer lies in two main concepts: sustainability and exclusivity.

Sustainability is increasingly becoming a part of our lives. Generation Z pays considerable attention to the environment and the impact of our actions on the world. Wearing vintage pieces makes a statement about not constantly needing new items in one’s wardrobe.

In an era where microtrends quickly rise and fall, standing out is key. This is why many celebrities are opting for pieces from different brand archives – to achieve exclusivity, as these items aren’t available to everyone.

Zendaya chose a two-piece set from Prada’s Spring/Summer 1993 collection for the 2023 NAACP Awards. Kylie Jenner wore a vintage Prada dress from the Spring/Summer 1992 collection in Milan, while Kendall Jenner selected a vintage white Alaïa dress from the Spring/Summer 1988 collection for her stroll through Paris.
